A2 Lesson 2: Writing 2-3 Related Sentences about a Familiar Topic
In the last lesson, we learned that all sentences in a paragraph must be about one main topic. Today, it's your turn to be the writer! We will practice writing a small group of 2-3 sentences that are all related1 to each other.
Step 1: Choose a Familiar Topic
The easiest way to start writing is to choose a familiar2 topic—something you know a lot about. This way, the ideas will come easily.
Good Topics to Start With:
- My family
- My best friend
- My house or my room
- My job
- My favorite food
Step 2: Brainstorm Ideas with Questions
Sometimes, it's hard to think of what to write. A great way to get ideas is to brainstorm3 by asking simple questions about your topic (like Who?, What?, Where?, Why?).
Let's try brainstorming for the topic "My Favorite Food."
- Question: What is my favorite food?
Idea: My favorite food is beef lok lak. - Question: Why do I like it?
Idea: I like the sweet and peppery sauce. - Question: When do I eat it?
Idea: I usually eat it on special occasions.
Put the ideas together, and you have a "mini-paragraph"!
My favorite food is beef lok lak. I like the sweet and peppery sauce. I usually eat it on special occasions.
✍️ Mini-Paragraph Checklist
When you write your sentences, check your work:
- ✔️ Did I choose one main topic?
- ✔️ Did I write 2-3 sentences about only that topic?
- ✔️ Did I check my capitalization for the start of sentences and for proper nouns?
- ✔️ Did I check my punctuation at the end of each sentence?
🧠 Practice Quiz: Which Sentence Belongs?
Read the topic and the first sentence. Which sentence (A or B) would be a good second sentence to continue the paragraph?
Topic: My Job
First Sentence: I work as a tour guide in Kampot.
- I show tourists the beautiful countryside.
- My brother works in a restaurant.
Answer: A. Sentence A is about being a tour guide. Sentence B is off-topic because it's about a different person's job.
