Hello Learners! 👋

Today, we're going to learn something important about writing: how to keep our sentences organized! When we write, we often group sentences that talk about the same idea or topic.

In this lesson, you will:

  • Understand what it means for sentences to be about "one topic."
  • Practice finding sentences that belong together.
  • Learn to spot a sentence that doesn't fit with others in a group.

Sentences About One Topic

When we write about something, we usually write several sentences to give information or tell a story about that one main idea or topic. These sentences "go together" because they are all connected to that topic.

Think of it like a conversation. If you are talking about your favorite animal, all your sentences will be about that animal.

Example 1: Sentences on the SAME Topic

Topic: My Cat

I have a cat.

Her name is Mittens.

She likes to sleep a lot.

All these sentences are about "My Cat." They belong together.

Example 2: One Sentence Does NOT Belong

Topic: My School Day

I go to school in the morning.

I learn English and Math.

My favorite color is blue.

I play with my friends at break time.

Can you see which sentence doesn't belong? The sentence "My favorite color is blue" is not about "My School Day." It's about a different topic.

Grouping sentences about one topic helps make our writing clear and easy to understand. This group of sentences is the beginning of a paragraph.

Activity 1: Which Sentences Fit the Topic?

Read the topic. Then, choose ALL the sentences that are about that topic.

Activity 2: Odd One Out!

Read the group of sentences. One sentence is NOT about the same topic as the others. Click on the sentence that does not belong.

✨ Tips for Finding Sentences on One Topic ✨

  • Look for the Main Idea: What is the group of sentences mostly about? This is the topic.
  • Check Each Sentence: Ask yourself, "Is this sentence telling me more about the main topic?"
  • Keywords: Sometimes, sentences on the same topic will repeat important words or use words with similar meanings related to the topic.

Great Job Organizing Sentences! 🎉

You are learning how to group sentences about the same topic. This is an important first step in writing good paragraphs!
