Writing: Expository Writing

B2 Lesson 1: Writing Clear Explanations

What you will learn: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a clear, logical, and objective paragraph that explains a topic or a process.

Model Text: Explaining a Process ✍️

Expository writing explains, describes, or informs. Let's look at a well-structured expository paragraph that explains how to make a Cambodian iced coffee.

How to Make a Cambodian Iced Coffee

Making a traditional Cambodian iced coffee is a simple process with a few key steps. First, a layer of sweetened condensed milk is poured into the bottom of a glass. Next, strong, dark-roast coffee, often brewed through a small cloth filter, is added to the glass. The coffee and milk are then stirred together thoroughly. Finally, the glass is filled to the top with ice, which chills the drink and dilutes it to the perfect strength for a hot day.

Breaking Down the Model

Let's analyze the parts of the model text that make it a clear explanation.

💡 The first sentence, "Making a traditional Cambodian iced coffee is a simple process...," is the Topic Sentence. It clearly tells the reader the main idea.
💡 The words "First, Next, Finally," are Logical Sequencers. They guide the reader through the steps in chronological order.
💡 The paragraph is Objective. It explains the process without giving personal opinions like "I think this coffee is delicious."

Your Writer's Toolkit 🛠️

Principles for Clear Explanations

  • Assume No Prior Knowledge: Explain your topic simply, as if teaching someone for the first time.
  • Organize Logically: Present information in an order that makes sense (e.g., chronological for a process).
  • Be Clear and Precise: Use simple, direct language. Avoid vague words.
  • Stay Objective: Your job is to present facts, not feelings. Keep your tone neutral.

Expository vs. Persuasive

Do (Expository): The Angkor Wat temple complex was built in the 12th century.
Don't (Persuasive): Angkor Wat is the most beautiful temple complex in the world.
