  • Recognize that the meaning of a phrasal verb is often different from the meaning of the main verb alone.

  • Use context to help understand new phrasal verbs.

Hello Cambodian Learners!

Phrasal verbs are very common in English! They are made of a main verb and a small word (a particle, like 'on', 'up', 'out'). Together, they often have a new meaning that can be different from the verb by itself. For example, "look" means to see with your eyes, but "look for" means to search for something. Learning these will help you understand everyday English conversations and texts, like instructions or stories about life in Cambodia.

What are Phrasal Verbs?

A phrasal verb = Verb + Particle (e.g., an adverb or preposition like up, down, on, off, in, out, for, away).

The meaning of the phrasal verb is often idiomatic, meaning you can't always guess it from the individual words.
