What is "Chunking"?
When we read slowly, we read word by word. When we read fluently, we read in "chunks" or phrases. This is the most important strategy to read faster and understand more.
BEFORE (Word-by-Word):
She... went... to... the... market...
AFTER (Reading in Chunks):
She went to the market.
How to Find Chunks
- Pause at Punctuation: Take a short pause ( , ) or a full stop ( . ).
- Look for Idea Groups: Read small groups of words that feel connected. (e.g., "her friend, Dara", "a bunch of bananas").
