C2 Active Listening: Critically Analyzing and Synthesizing Information from Multiple Spoken Sources
Welcome to C2! Today is Wednesday, June 11th, 2025. In this lesson, we will practice a high-level academic and professional skill: critically analyzing and synthesizing1 information from multiple sources2. This means combining different viewpoints to form a complete picture.
1. The Process of Synthesizing
When you listen to multiple sources, you are a detective examining evidence from different witnesses. Follow this process:
- Analyze Source A: Listen to the first speaker. What is their main point and perspective? Take brief notes.
- Analyze Source B: Listen to the second speaker. What is their main point and perspective? Take separate notes.
- Compare & Contrast: Look at your notes. Where do the speakers agree? Where do they disagree? Are they looking at the issue from different angles (e.g., economic vs. social)?
- Synthesize: Combine the valid points from all sources to create your own comprehensive understanding of the topic.
2. Practice: "The Future of Remote Work"
You will hear two speakers give their opinion on the future of remote work. Listen to each one, take notes, and prepare to synthesize their views.
Source A: A Tech CEO
"From my perspective3 as a CEO... the shift to remote work is an overwhelmingly positive development... gives access to a global talent pool, reduces office overhead, and offers flexibility... a 15% increase in productivity... It's clearly the most efficient and logical model..."
Source B: An Urban Economist
"While the benefits for individual companies are clear, we must consider the wider socio-economic implications4... a large-scale shift to remote work could have a devastating impact on urban centers. The entire ecosystem of businesses... relies on the daily presence of office workers. We risk seeing our city centers become hollowed-out shells."
3. Synthesizing the Viewpoints
Now, let's analyze and synthesize the information from your notes.
- What is the Tech CEO's main argument (Source A)?
- What is the Urban Economist's main concern (Source B)?
- Do the speakers disagree on the facts, or are they just focusing on different aspects of the issue?
- In a single sentence, how would you synthesize both viewpoints?

Analysis: 1. That remote work is a highly efficient and positive model for companies. 2. That a permanent shift to remote work could destroy the economy of city centers. 3. They don't disagree on the facts; they are just analyzing the issue from two different perspectives (micro/company-level vs. macro/societal-level). 4. A good synthesis is: "While remote work offers significant benefits to individual companies, its large-scale adoption poses a serious economic threat to the businesses that constitute urban centers."
Final Quiz: Synthesize the Arguments
Listen to two short statements about a proposed tourist tax in Siem Reap. Then, choose the sentence that best synthesizes the two positions.
Source A (Government Official):
(Listen to the audio)
Source B (Guesthouse Owner):
(Listen to the audio)
Which sentence best synthesizes BOTH viewpoints?
- (a) The tourist tax is a good idea because it will help restore temples.
- (b) The tourist tax is a bad idea because it will hurt small businesses.
- (c) While the proposed tourist tax aims to fund heritage preservation, there is a concern from local businesses that it could make the destination less competitive for budget travelers.

Answer: (c). This is the only option that accurately and neutrally represents the core arguments from BOTH sources.
Homework Task
1. Synthesize the News: Find a news story on a major international event from a Western news source (like BBC or Reuters). Then, find an article on the *same event* from a different news agency (like Al Jazeera or a major Asian news source). Compare them. Do they focus on the same details? Do they have a different perspective? Write a short summary that includes the information from both.
2. Synthesize a Discussion: Listen to a podcast or watch a debate with two guests who have different opinions on a topic. Take notes on each person's main argument. Then, pause the video and try to explain the overall disagreement to a friend in your own words, representing both sides fairly.
