Getting to Know Yourself

You have learned about your family, food, and animals. Now, let's learn about something even closer to you: your own body1! Knowing the names for body parts is essential for talking about health, actions, and describing people.

Parts of the Head

👤 Head2 (hed) ក្បាល The top part of your body with your brain and face.
Example: "I wear a hat on my head."
👀 Eye3 (eye) ភ្នែក The part of the body you use to see.
Example: "I have two eyes."
👂 Ear4 (eer) ត្រចៀក The part of the body you use to hear.
Example: "I listen to music with my ears."
👃 Nose5 (nohz) ច្រមុះ The part of your face you use to smell.
Example: "I can smell flowers with my nose."
👄 Mouth6 (mowth) មាត់ The part of your face you use to eat and talk.
Example: "I eat rice with my mouth."

Arms and Legs

💪 Arm7 (arm) ដៃ The part between your shoulder and your hand.
Example: "I carry my bag with my arm."
Hand8 (hand) ដៃ The part at the end of your arm with five fingers.
Example: "I write with my hand."
🦵 Leg9 (leg) ជើង The part of your body you use to stand and walk.
Example: "My legs are tired from walking."
🦶 Foot10 (fut) ជើង The part at the end of your leg.
Example: "I wear shoes on my feet."

Usage Note: Irregular Plurals

Usually, we add "-s" to make a plural word (one cup ➞ two cups). But some body parts have a special, irregular plural form!

  • one foot ➞ two feet (Correct)
  • one foot ➞ two foots (Incorrect)

  • one tooth ➞ two teeth (Correct)
  • one tooth ➞ two tooths (Incorrect)

At the Doctor's Office

Srey is not feeling well and visits a doctor.

Doctor: Hello Srey, what is the problem today?

Srey: Hello Doctor. My head hurts. And my ears feel hot.

Doctor: I see. Please open your mouth. Ah, yes. Your throat is red.

Srey: My whole body feels tired. My arms and legs feel weak.

Doctor: It sounds like you have a small fever. You need to rest.
