Listening A1: Distinguishing Common English Sounds (vs. Khmer)
Welcome, students! Some sounds in English are new for Khmer speakers. Learning to hear and make these sounds is very important. It helps people understand you when you speak English in Siem Reap or anywhere else. Today, we will practice three new sounds.
1. The 'F' Sound (as in "Five")
In Khmer, you do not have the 'F' sound. Many learners use a 'P' sound instead. Let's learn the correct 'F' sound.
How to make the sound: Put your top teeth on your bottom lip. Gently blow air out. Do not use your voice. It should feel like a little bit of wind.
Let's listen to the 'F' sound and some words.
2. The 'V' Sound (as in "Very")
The 'V' sound is also new. It is the brother of the 'F' sound. The mouth position is the same, but this time, you use your voice.
How to make the sound: Put your top teeth on your bottom lip, just like for 'F'. Now, make a sound with your voice. You should feel a vibration (a buzz) in your throat.
Let's listen to the 'V' sound and some words.
3. The 'TH' Sound (as in "Thank You")
This is a very important sound in English. Khmer speakers often use an 'S' sound instead, but this can change the word.
How to make the sound: Gently put your tongue between your teeth. Blow air over your tongue. Do not use your voice.
Let's listen to the 'TH' sound and some words.
