🔄 C2 Final Task: Integrated Grammar Application
Welcome to your final consolidation lesson. At this point, you have moved beyond simply learning grammar rules and have entered the realm of mastery. C2 proficiency1 is not about knowing every rule, but about possessing a flexible2 and intuitive3 command of the language. It is the ability to select the perfect structure, tone, and vocabulary for any context, spontaneously and effectively.
This final activity will challenge you to synthesize4 all your skills in a realistic, multi-faceted task.
The Challenge Scenario
Imagine you work for a local NGO in Siem Reap dedicated to cultural preservation. An international online magazine has just published an article about a lesser-known temple you recently helped restore. The article has a negative tone and contains some factual errors, suggesting the restoration was poorly done. Your director has asked you to manage the response.
Your Tasks: Demonstrating Stylistic Variation
You must respond to this situation in three different ways, for three different audiences and purposes. This will require you to use your full C2 toolkit.
- The Formal Correction: Write a short, formal letter to the editor of the magazine. Your purpose is to politely correct the factual inaccuracies and defend the quality of the work.
- The Persuasive Public Post: Write a short, engaging post for your NGO's Facebook page. Your purpose is to counter the negative impression and build public pride and support for the project.
- The Informal Explanation: Write a short, informal message (e.g., on Telegram or WhatsApp) to a friend abroad who has read the article and is asking you what really happened.
Before you begin, think about how your choice of grammar (passive voice, inversion, conditionals), vocabulary (formal vs. informal, collocations), and sentence structure will change for each task.
📖 Model Responses & Analysis
Here are some examples of how a C2 user might approach these tasks. Analyze the stylistic choices.
Task 1: Formal Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the article "A Ruin Restored or a Ruin Damaged?" published on June 12th. While we appreciate the attention given to this important heritage site, it is imperative that some factual discrepancies be corrected. The article claims that local materials were not used; however, not only were all materials sourced from within the province, but they were also prepared using traditional Khmer techniques. It is also suggested that the restoration was rushed. On the contrary, had the work not been completed before the rainy season, irreversible water damage would have occurred. We trust you will publish this clarification.
Task 2: Persuasive Facebook Post
Have you seen the incredible work completed at Prasat Kravan? ❤️ We've seen some inaccurate reports online, so we want to share the truth about this amazing project! Having worked tirelessly for months, our local Cambodian team has saved this treasure for all of us. It is the skill of our local artisans that has brought this temple back to life. How can we not feel immense pride in their achievement? Come and see for yourself what dedication and expertise can accomplish! #ProudOfOurHeritage #CambodianArts
Analysis: Uses engaging, emotional language, a rhetorical question ("How can we not feel...?"), a participle clause ("Having worked..."), and a cleft sentence ("It is the skill...") to create an inspiring and positive tone.Task 3: Informal Message to a Friend
Hey, saw your message about that article. Honestly, it's a bit of a joke. The writer clearly didn't do their research. They said the work was rushed, but if we hadn't finished, the whole wall could have collapsed in the rainy season! Just another journalist trying to make a controversial story. The temple looks amazing, you'll see when you visit.
Analysis: Uses informal vocabulary ('a joke', 'controversial story'), ellipsis ("saw your message..."), and a direct, personal tone. The mixed conditional ("if we hadn't finished, the whole wall could have collapsed...") is used naturally to explain the reality of the situation.📝 Your Final Capstone Task
Now, it's your turn to demonstrate your mastery. Choose one of the three tasks from the "Challenge Scenario" above (the formal letter, the social media post, or the informal message).
Write your own response (approximately 75-100 words). Focus on creating a piece of writing where the grammar, style, and vocabulary are perfectly matched to the audience and purpose. This is your chance to synthesize all the skills you have developed.
