Grammar: Present Simple

A2 Lesson 18: Habits and Routines

What you will learn: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use the Present Simple tense with adverbs of frequency to talk about your habits and daily routines.

When to Use the Present Simple

The most common use of the Present Simple tense is to talk about actions that are generally true. This includes your habits (things you do regularly) and routines (your normal schedule).

Example: I work in Siem Reap. (This is generally true). She drinks coffee every morning. (This is a habit).

The Grammar Rule 📖

How to Form the Present Simple

There are only two forms for the verb. The form changes depending on the subject.

I / you / we / they Use the base form of the verb (no change).
  • I work.
  • They eat.
he / she / it Add -s or -es to the verb.
  • He works.
  • She eats.

Adding Signal Words (Adverbs of Frequency)

We often use "signal words" to say how often we do something. These words usually go before the main verb.
