Grammar: Present Simple
A2 Lesson 18: Habits and Routines
When to Use the Present Simple
The most common use of the Present Simple tense is to talk about actions that are generally true. This includes your habits (things you do regularly) and routines (your normal schedule).
Example: I work in Siem Reap. (This is generally true). She drinks coffee every morning. (This is a habit).
The Grammar Rule 📖
How to Form the Present Simple
There are only two forms for the verb. The form changes depending on the subject.
Subject | Verb Form |
---|---|
I / you / we / they | Use the base form of the verb (no change).
|
he / she / it | Add -s or -es to the verb.
|
Adding Signal Words (Adverbs of Frequency)
We often use "signal words" to say how often we do something. These words usually go before the main verb.
Signal Word | Meaning (How Often) | Example Sentence |
---|---|---|
always | 100% | I always drink coffee in the morning. |
usually | ~80% | She usually goes to the market. |
sometimes | ~50% | We sometimes eat at the riverside. |
never | 0% | He never swims in the sea. |
every day/week | Regularly | They visit their family every Sunday. |
In Conversation
Lina: What time do you usually start work, Vuthy?
Vuthy: I always start at 8 AM. My boss is very strict!
Lina: Wow. I sometimes start at 9 AM. Do you work on Saturdays?
Vuthy: No, I never work on Saturdays. I usually visit my family in the village.
