Listening: Listening in Various Contexts & for Specific Purposes B2 - Lesson 1: Understanding Standard Media Broadcasts (news, documentaries)

Listening to News and Documentaries

CEFR Level B2

Lesson Goals

In this lesson, you will practice understanding standard media broadcasts. You will learn to identify the structure of news reports, recognize the narrative style of documentaries, and differentiate between them.

Understanding Listening Contexts

At the B2 level, it's important to understand not just what is said, but also the context. The way information is presented in a news report is very different from a documentary. Let's explore the key features of each.

Features of a News Broadcast

News reports are designed to deliver key information quickly and efficiently. They are objective and factual, focusing on recent events. The most important information is always presented first (the "headline"), followed by more details. The key is to listen for the '5 Ws': Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

Features of a Documentary

A documentary also presents facts, but its goal is to explain a topic in depth, often using a storytelling format. The language is more descriptive and the pace is usually slower than a news report. Documentaries explore the 'how' and 'why' of a topic in much greater detail.

Key Tip: Active Listening Strategies

To improve your comprehension of media broadcasts, use these active listening strategies:

  • Predict Content: Before you listen, read the headline or title. What do you expect to hear about? Activating your background knowledge prepares your brain to understand.
  • Note-Taking: Don't try to write everything. For news, create a simple chart to fill in the '5 Ws'. For documentaries, jot down key concepts or interesting facts as you hear them.
  • Listen for Signposting: Speakers use words like "firstly," "however," "in addition," and "in conclusion" to structure their talk. These words are signposts that tell you where the information is going.

Practice Activities

Listen to the audio excerpts in the player above and use your active listening skills to complete the tasks below.

  1. Activity 1: News Report Analysis

Listen to the news report about the new airport terminal. Identify the key facts.

"Good evening. Officials from the Ministry of Transport announced today that the new terminal at the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport will officially open on July 1st. The new terminal, which cost approximately $50 million to construct, is expected to double the airport's passenger capacity. This development is part of a broader government plan to boost tourism and economic growth in the region."

    Answer the following:

    • What will open?
    • When will it open?
    • How much did it cost?
    • Why was it built?
    Show Answers

Answers: 1. The new airport terminal. 2. July 1st. 3. Approx. $50 million. 4. To boost tourism and economic growth.

  2. Activity 2: Documentary Analysis

Listen to the documentary excerpt about the Tonlé Sap lake. Identify the main ideas.

"The Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, is a place of incredible biodiversity. Its most remarkable feature is the seasonal reversing flow of the Tonlé Sap River... During the rainy season... water from the swollen Mekong pushes into the lake, expanding its size by up to five times. This massive inundation creates a vast and vital breeding ground for hundreds of species of fish."

    Answer the following:

    • What is the main topic?
    • What is the lake's most remarkable feature?
    • What happens during the rainy season?
    Show Answers

Answers: 1. The Tonlé Sap lake's unique ecosystem. 2. The seasonal reversing flow of its river. 3. The lake expands up to five times its size, which creates a breeding ground for fish.

  3. Activity 3: News or Documentary?

Read the text below. Based on the style and language, is it from a news report or a documentary?

"Archaeologists working near Banteay Srei temple have uncovered a previously unknown statue believed to be over a thousand years old. The discovery was made just yesterday, and officials have already secured the site. Further announcements are expected next week."
    Show Answer

Answer: A news report. The language focuses on a single, recent event ("uncovered," "just yesterday," "expected next week"), which is the classic style of a news story.
